This large shoulder-bag style case fits a 500/4, 800/5.6, 200-400/4 and some 600/4 lenses with DSLR body & hood in the shooting position. 67cm (26-3/8") I.D. Height.
This case was designed for a 500/4 lens with a body attached, but will also hold other combinations. It is called a “compact” long lens case because the diameter is smaller than the L522 or L622 PolyCore™ cases — it is too small for 400/2.8 and 600/4 lenses unless one or more of the hoods is removed. It is also lighter in weight and offers less protection.
- The L611 same height are our L622, which is most likely, the world’s tallest soft-side long lens case, but it has the smaller diameter matching the L311 or L511 series cases.
- Converts to a backpack with a H255 Backpack harness.
- We took the opening of our Journeyman Modular Pack and adapted it for use on a long lens case, which yields a functional “clam shell” front and top opening case. This design will make it easier to use when used vertically inside a vehicle.
- The main zipper has a water-repellent zipper, but for heavy rain, a rain cover is recommended.
- This case has a second grab handle on the side of the case, so it can be carried like a guitar, on its side.
- 200-400s, 400/4s and 300/2.8s can get lost in this case, due to the smaller diameter of these lenses. We strongly advise purchasing the L029 Foam Insert (which reduces the diameter near the front element), or consider purchasing the E660 or E976 lens pouch instead.

- Nikon or Canon 500/4 or Nikon 200-400/4 lens with a pro-sized body attached (with quick-release plate attached) with hood in the shooting position (with leatherette lens cover or “sock” on with certain models only)
- Canon 500/4 lens with a pro-sized body (with quick-release plate attached) with hood in the shooting position + 1.4x teleconverter (2.0x is too long for this case)
- Canon 800/5.6 with a Don Zeck lens cap (instead of the bulky OEM leatherette sock) with the hood reversed + pro body
- 300/2.8 with full-sized body attached with hood in shooting position (with leatherette lens cover) + teleconverter.
- Canon 600/4 with a Don Zeck lens cap (instead of the bulky OEM leatherette sock) with the hood(s) in the shooting mode (no body attached)
- Nikon 600/4 VR II: “The hood diameter of this lens is 7-½" without soft cover and 8-½" with soft cover, both being too large to fit into this case.” No report on whether or not this lens without a hood will fit. (March 2011)
Field Reports
- Canon 800/5.6 with a Don Zeck lens cap (instead of the Canon sock) with the hood in the shooting position + a 1D Mark IV fits, if the body is rotated 90 degrees (due to the curve of the case it is just a little too tight). “The two side pockets for water bottles do not work. They push in on the bag making it hard to get the lens back in the bag. This was not a problem on the L622 as the case was harder. I used to carry the rain cover on one side and a water bottle on the other with the L622. Cannot do that now.” (2013, see photos in gallery above)
- Nikon 200-400/4 with 1.4x and the hood in the shooting position with the Nikon leatherette lens sock and D4 body attached fits with room to spare. (November 2014)
- Nikon 500/4 AF-S VR II with the hood in the shooting position, lens cap or sock on, and TC14 converter too....it is 25.5 inches from end of hood sock to back of camera. It fits inside the case nicely with any size body attached. (February 2014)
- Canon 200-400/4 with the hood in the shooting position and body attached fits with room to spare. (February 2014)
- An old manual focus Nikon 500/4 with pro body attached, hood in shooting position and leatherette on……….which is exactly how I transport the lens……..with this set-up, the bag BARELY zippers shut………..might try it with leatherette off, but hate to not keep that on front.” (January 2014)
External Attachment Options
Lower Position
- One A257 or M330 can be attached in the lower center of the case (standard position & shown in photos).
- Two single-wide pouches (E110, E280 etc.) can be attached to either side of the lower A257, covering the collapsible pockets. Alternately, a double-wide pouch (A257, M330 etc.) can also be attached to either the left or right of the standard A257 Body Pouch, but this attachment location is a little loose which may cause the pouch to shift around a little, unless secured with a Y205 strap.
Upper Position
- The upper part of the case will house an equal amount of pouches, except it has additional attachment points, so two single-wide pouches can be attached in the center.
Back (flat) Side of the Case
- A double-wide pouch (A257, M330 etc.) can be attached to the lower back or flat part of the case, although this disables use of any backpack harness or may make using a shoulder strap awkward.
Tripod Use
-Remove the A257 center pouch (shown in photo above) and replace it with a T164 or T317 pouch for attaching a tripod (see this page for pix). Attach a Y204 to the top of the case to hold the top part of the tripod. The A257 can then be reattached to the upper or lower part of the case, slightly off center. The L611 provides additional attachment points for a T164 or T317 on the right-hand side too.

*The I.D. is the maximum diameter of the front element and/or lens cover that will fit inside this case. The circumference is 66cm (26") and measures the entire inside perimeter of the “D” shape of the case. It is larger than 3.14 times the diameter to allow extra room for the lens tripod foot.
