Mom's Stuff Salve

Overview

A premium chamois lubricant. A superfood for your skin!

This product was originally designed by, and for river guides (i.e. running the Colorado for 20+ days straight through the Grand Canyon) for the maintenance of hands, feet, face and butt. Just as cyclists dread having saddle sores, river runners dread crotch rot or toeolio (athlete’s foot on steriods). This salve will help prevent, and treat such problems.

Mom’s Stuff Salve is superb & unique in the world of handcrafted salves. This product is made in small batches personally by Lee Udall Bennion, who lives in the mountains of central Utah. It is loaded with natural anti-oxidants, also vitamins E and A. Every ingredient has active properties and a purpose — there are no cheap fillers in Mom’s Stuff.

Some ingredients are known to aid in cell regeneration, sooth inflammation, and draw out infection. Most are known to have anti bacterial & anti fungal benefits. Some are known to increase circulation.

Made with all natural:

  • Extra virgin cold pressed olive oil
  • Locally harvested beeswax
  • Wild harvested pinion pine pitch (this single ingredient may be the prevailing reason for the high cost of this product)
  • Sweet Almond oil
  • Apricot kernel oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Lanolin
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Rosemary essential oil
  • Neem oil

Additional Ingredient Information

Pinion pine pitch: Pinion pine pitch has been used by the Native Americans of the southwest for centuries as a remedy for skin problems. It readily penetrates the skin and is good for dry skin problems. It may encourage re-growth in tissue and may be effective in killing harmful bacteria. It is known to have great ability as a drawing agent to pull infection and toxins (insect bites) from flesh and help wounds heal. It is appropriate for use on humans and livestock as well.
Pinion pine pitch contains flavonols, proanthocyanidins, resins and volatile oils that are stimulating and anti-inflammatory in effect. The albetic resins may stimulate topical circulation and noticeably speed up the foreign body response.
Pinion Pine Pitch smells lovely. It is probably the predominant smell of Mom’s Stuff Salve. Customers who have lived in the west and moved away tell me that they feel like they have been transported back to the high deserts they love by opening their jar of Mom’s Stuff Salve.
Pinion pine pitch is not commercially available and that is why Mom’s Stuff Salve is such a rare product. If you search hard, you may find a few other people making some products with pinion pine pitch as an ingredient, but not in consortium with all the other fine ingredients found in Mom’s Stuff Salve or in the same generous ratio.

I use locally harvested pinion pine pitch. This is a sustainable activity. Trees are not harmed or cut down. We gather pitch that has fallen to the ground or hanging outside the wound on the tree.

Beeswax: Beeswax is a pure, natural wax that human beings have been using for thousands of years. To produce their wax, bees must consume about eight times as much honey by mass. It is estimated that bees fly 150,000 miles, roughly six times around the earth, to yield one pound of beeswax.  I find this fact rather humbling.

Beeswax contains vitamin A, which may be beneficial in softening and re-hydrating dry skin and in cell reconstruction. Beeswax acts as a protectant or invisible glove for you when your hands are in and out of water, the soil, clay or dry heat, while still allowing the skin to breathe.

Beeswax also provides slight anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, which can benefit the body. The Mayo Clinic recommends using a lip balm that contains beeswax to reduce your chances of developing chapped lips. Mom’s Stuff is a great lip balm.

Beeswax may have mild antibacterial properties, according to a 2005 study conducted at Dubai Specialized Medical Center in the United Arab Emirates. Researchers combined honey, olive oil and beeswax, then applied the mixture to laboratory plates on which the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and the fungus, Candida albicans were growing. The honey/beeswax mixture inhibited the growth of the bacteria and fungus, making beeswax, along with honey, potentially beneficial in the treatment of diaper rash and other bacterial skin conditions.

One important quality of beeswax in Mom’s Stuff Salve is that it gives body or stiffens up any oils it is blended with. I make Mom’s Stuff very stiff because I have opened up jars of other salves while out in the desert only to have the melted salve pour out on to the ground. Because of the high ratio of Beeswax to oil in Mom’s Stuff, this will not likely happen to you.

I am willing to bet that there is more Beeswax in Mom’s Stuff than in any other skin care product you can buy. It isn’t cheap like paraffin wax. I buy my Beeswax from a local beekeeper so I know the source and that it is clean and pure. I also like the fact that I am supporting another local family business and bees!

Neem oil: Neem oil comes from the neem tree in India. It has been a staple of Indian medicinal plants for hundreds of years. It contains antiseptic, anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties making it very effective at treating eczema, psoriasis, acne, rashes and any other skin irritations. It relieves swelling and redness and boosts the immune system giving it the ability to fight off skin infections and promote healing.

It contains Vitamin E and is high in essential fatty acids, which moisturize and help improve skin’s elasticity. It also has regenerative properties and is very effective at soothing and restoring dry, cracked skin.

Richard’s Recommendation

For ultra distance cyclists, finding a chamois lube that is thick and stays put is a challenge. The first thing to look for is whether or not it comes in a jar or a tube. Runnier lubes come in a tube and typically wear off quickly. Mom’s Stuff is so thick that you normally use your fingernail to draw it out of the container. Afterwards, it immediately softens with body heat. Because of the healing properties it can be used for both prevention (pre-ride) and skin maintenance (post-ride).

We provide an optional plastic vial for use in your bike bag, travel kit or drop bag. I recommend you gently microwave the 4 oz. container and carefully portion off a small amount in the vial with the aid of a spoon. The balance of the salve will thicken again as it cools.
